The Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra is a scientific institution focused on research and advanced training in the social sciences and the humanities from an inter- and transdisciplinar perspective.

Since CES’ foundation in 1978, it aims at doing research with and for an inclusive, innovative and reflexive society by fostering creative critical approaches to some of the timeliest challenges of contemporary societies.  Its ambition is to continue to attract generations of exceptionally talented researchers and students in the domain of the social sciences and the humanities.

The core of CES’ scientific strategy is the goal of democratizing knowledge, reenergizing human rights and contributing to making science a public good. We pursue this mission by continuously reshaping our research fields in response to societal needs. Our work encompasses a wide range of scientific and outreach activities, at the national and international level, with particular emphasis on the fostering of North-South and South-North dialogues, contributing to the development, dissemination and application of cutting-edge science, and to advanced research and training of excellence.
